Class Updates and Reminders!

Dear Parents

As-salamu-Alaikum,

We had a wonderful week Alhahumdulilah.

Spelling:  Students completed review activities for the previous lessons, 19-22.

Reading: Students practiced reading stamina during read to self.

Writing: On Tuesday, students learned how to write a lab report on an experiment  called "Float the Boat" that they did in Science. We discussed the steps of the experiment and then wrote it down on a worksheet as a class.

On Thursday, we talked about International day! Students took turns to talk about their traditional clothes, food, and some information about their country. Then, students went back to their seats and did some informative writing about what they learned about different countries.

Math: We started a unit called "2- Dimensional Shapes." Students learned  the meaning of 2 - Dimension and also learned the meaning of different 2-D shapes(Tri- three,
Penta- 5, and Hexa- 6 and so on). This week, the class learning goals were to explore and identify the names of different 2- D shapes, to  identify different 2- D shapes by sides and vertices, and  to sort and classify 2- D shapes into quadrilaterals and polygon.

For example, we discussed the quadrilateral, is four-sided polygon. There are many kinds of quadrilaterals. The five most common types are the rectangle, the square, the parallelogram, the trapezoid, and the rhombus. Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes. They are made of straight lines, and the shape is "closed" (all the lines connect up). Students also explored different 2- D shapes on geo -boards and pattern blocks.

Science: On Monday, we talked about the difference between solids that float and sink. Students looked at different solids and predicted whether each solid was
going to float or sink. Then we put the solids in water and recorded the results as a class. Students also learned about buoyancy.
On Tuesday, we did an experiment on "sink or float" where students had to build a shape out of a piece of clay which could float on water. We had a great time with this hands on learning experience.

Field Trip We had a great time on our field trip to Museum of Aviation and Space on Wednesday, Alhumdulilah! Students attended a hands-on workshop about our current unit of study in science, "Properties of Matter" and also explored the exhibits in the museum.

I would like to thank all the volunteers for their generous time and help! We couldn't have done it without them! Jazakum Allahu khairan!

Islamic Studies: On Monday, prepared for our Seerah part 1 quiz by reviewing what we have learned about Seerah so far.On Tuesday, students took a turn to read a story about Prophet Nuh. Afterward, they took turns answering questions about the story of prophet Nuh.

Class Updates!

Assalamu Alaikum,

We had a great week last week Alhamdulilah!

Writing:Students learned about "How To" writing and  which is also  called procedural writing. Then, they wrote  two informative writing pieces about how to get ready for recess during winter and how to do addition with regrouping.

Math: We have been learning addition and subtraction with regrouping.  They learned different ways to add and subtract 2 digit numbers using base ten blocks, the decomposing method and the traditional method(vertical way) Students worked in groups to add and subtract with regrouping, and they solved word problems in their math journals and textbook. They also learned the 4 steps to problem solving.

Math Workshop: We had an amazing  math workshop  about coins, place value, fractions, and clocks. Students learned and reviewed these concepts through different  fun and hands on activities. They had a blast ! Also, Jazakum Allahu Khairun for all parents who came to help out , Alhumdulilah!

Science: We did 3 fun learning experiments about liquids and solids as a class. First, we did an experiment called " Liquid Race" where students observed how some liquids are thick and some are thin. We had a race between oil, maple syrup, mustard and ketchup and then recorded our findings. Then we learned what happen when we mix different liquids with water and recorded our results in a worksheet. We learned what a mixture and a solution is. Lastly, students observed an experiment where they learned what happened when we mix different solids( Salt, sugar, sand, powder milk, parsley flakes, and mustard)  in a liquid        ( water). We learned that salt and sugar when mixed with water make a solution while the other solids that didn't mix are mixtures.

Islamic Studies: We  completed the unit of Seerah by learning  about Prophet Mohamed (SAW) and his love for children.

Social Studies: We reviewed cardinal directions and completed a worksheet where we labelled and drew things in the king's castle by following the cardinal directions.

Art:On Friday, we did two art activities as art centers. In the first one, students made an ice cream sundae craft where they added the value of their ice cream scoops and extra toppings for their sundae ice cream and then made a yummy sundae craft. In the second one , students started to make a colourful butterfly mural.

Class Dojo Party: We enjoyed yummy snacks in our class dojo party. Students also participated in a competition called" Balancing an Apple on Top" where they had to walk from one end to another while balancing an apple on top of their head.:) They had a fabulous time, Alhumdulilah!
