Social Studies project

Assalamu Alaykom dear parents,

Students will be doing a social Studies project during the winter break.

Choose a world community. Make a research and gather information about this community.
Your report should include:
  • The name of the community.
  • Three things you have learnt about this community (describe and illustrate on picture cards)
You can choose 3 things among these: food, shelter, clothing, communication, education, entertainment, and transportation.
Students can use these links to help them decide which community they'll choose.
Jazakom Allah Khairan

Before we begin our break the school is trying to have a quick mini-fundraiser for the Syrian crisis.

The deadline to donate would be this Thursday, December 19, before the students go for the winter break.

Whatever you can give your kids is acceptable (money up to $35, warm blankets, coats)
May Allah SWT reward all of your intentions and kind acts of charity in shaa Allah. Ameen!

Weekly update

Assalamu Alaykom dear parents,
We had a very successful week alhamdulillah.

Reading Comprehension: students are learning how to do a paragraph attack. Below is an explanation of that strategy:
1. Read and circle the title. Look for clues in the title about the main idea of the passage.
2. Number the paragraphs.  Since test questions often ask students to go back to specific paragraphs to look for information, labeling the paragraphs prior to reading can assist with these questions later.  In addition, beginning with a simple task boosts confidence and allows a moment to calm nerves.
3. Read the questions.  If the main purpose of reading the passage is to answer the questions at the end, why not begin with the end in mind?  Read the questions, underline the key words, and take note of what information needs to be found.  (No need to read the answer choices at this time.  That will come later.)
4. Read the passage.  Underline all topic sentences and highlight key words.  Make notes in the margins about big ideas.  Be careful to highlight only a few words and phrases per paragraph.
5. Reread the questions.  This time, read the answer choices as well.  After reading each answer choice, decide if the answer is not correct or maybe correct.
6.  If time allows, reread the questions and check the answers.
Math: Students are writing and solving addition problems using words, pictures and numerals.
Science: this week we've seen how humans grow and change and we have also studied animals' adaptation.
Social Studies: Traditions and Celebrations: Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day.
Islamic Studies: We talked about the two shining treasures: Quran and Sunnah, and their importance in Muslims lives. We also started the story of prophet Nuh pbuh.
Math Problem of the Week!
Write the answer on a separate piece of paper and write your child full name and grade.  I will put their answers in the draw box.
H.WWeekly homework is sent home today.
Jazakum Allah khairan for your cooperation.

Alhamdulillah we had a very good week.
This is a list of what we've covered this week.

Math: children create and solve story problems involving addition, using place-value concepts.

Social studies: we have covered two important celebrations; the new Hijri year and Canada Day.

Islamic Studies: Hijra of the prophet pbuh.

Science: students have seen what is a Larva and we have also talked about animals that lay eggs (animals that lay many eggs, animals that lay eggs and do not take care of their babies, and animals that lay eggs and take care of their babies)

Homework: Students have their blue H.W folders. Can you please encourage them to start doing it so that they do not rush at the last minute. H.W is due November 13th.

Math Home Connection: Provide straws or toothpicks that can be clustered into 10s with a twist tie. Ask your child to model one of the following addition problems:

Our Work

Assalamu Alaykom dear parents

We had a very good week mashallah!

  • Reading Comprehension: we've been reading fiction texts. Students learned that a fiction text has a beginning a middle and an ending. They also know that a story's map contains characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution for that problem.
  • Grammar: Adjectives: size (big, small), age (young, old), shape (round, oval), color, material  (wooden, cotton) and origin (French, Canadian.)
  • Writing: we've been practicing writing descriptive sentences and short fiction or real stories (my lost tooth, my favorite pet, a healthy meal.)
  • Math: we've launched the 7th unit Addition and subtraction. Students have prepared their own place-value mats as we were learning strategies for solving addition problems. I will also blog the Home connection so that you can do it with the kids at home. I won't be sending the books home unless there is an unfinished class work.
  • Social Studies: we've covered Victoria Day and we did Canadian Symbols (maple leaf, maple tree, beaver, and moose.)
  • Islamic Studies: we've started the Unit: Born to worship. We've talked about the shining treasures Quran and Sunnah.
  • Science: students did some activities related to animals and their babies. We've also seen Human's Life Cycle. What is inside an egg? and animal habitats. Students know that all animals begin life as eggs (even humans) and that some animals grow inside the mother and are born, while some others are laid in a nest and hatch. (This point is a little bit tricky for them!. I advise you to talk with them about it and check their understanding.)
  • Art: we've been drawing following a grid, and coloring using patterns.

Homework: I am not sending a H.W booklet as usual, it is just a reading comprehension page. I want them to focus on the book report. I've sent a copy of the book report template with the students two weeks ago. You can choose the book that your kid likes the most and fill in the template. I will ask students to present the story they've read to the class, (I'll be sending the rubric with them on Monday in shallah.)

Jazakum Allah kairan,
Have a wonderful weekend!
