Updates about Mammal Project-Tr.Nancy

Dear Parents,

Assalamu Alaikum

The grade two students started working on the "DO" portion of their mammal research today. Unfortunately, a few students did not have their mammal book or their KWL Chart and Question sheet with them.  As a result, they were unable to follow along and do the required work. This stage is a crucial part of their research, so it is important that they come to the class or library prepared.

Please note that this first research is done under the supervision of both teachers and myself. Because the bulk of their research will be done at school, they need their materials with them at school until their research is done.

Tomorrow, I will be in both classes to continue what we started today, inshaAllah. Please make sure they have their animal book and papers with them before they leave for school.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Jazakum Allahu Khairan.

Sincerely,

Nancy-Ann Brethour

Updates about Mammal Project-Tr.Nancy

Dear Parents,
Assalamu Alaikum

During the grade 2A and 2B's weekly library visit, they continued with the "Planning" stage. They also chose a book on a mammal of their choice. Afterwards, they were given a KWL Chart along with a 5W1H (Who, What, Where, Why, When, and How) paper. The first step was to have them write something about their mammal that they already knew on the KWL Chart. Next, they were asked to come up with one question for each 5W1H. Asking questions is something new for them, so the teachers and I helped the students when they needed our assistance. Asking questions is a crucial part of the research process. For this reason, we want them to get into the habit of doing so; the students worked on their papers for the whole library period.

This week, the teachers and I want them to finish their questions so that next week, they can start looking through the book to find the answers to their questions. The goal for next week is to start the "Do" stage. This step requires the students to look at the table of contents, look at the index, and read to find the answers to their questions. In addition, they will learn how to take simple notes, how to organize the information, and how to credit their sources. After all that hard work, they get to present their mammal to the class.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email.

Sincerely,

Nancy-Ann Brethour

Classwork and Homework

As-salamu-alaikum wa Rahmatullah

Dear Parents,

Language: Students are learning how to form compound sentences. I wrote simple sentences on the board and students used the conjunctions but & and to form compound sentences. Students took turns to say 2 simple sentences and each student would write the correct conjunction on his/her white board to join them. Each student wrote three compound sentences on his/her board and shared it with the class.

Math: Students completed a worksheet where they added nickels and dimes by counting by 5's and 10's.

Library: We went to the library in our language time and Tr. Nancy gave each student a worksheet where they wrote what they already know about their mammal and what they want to know. Students also wrote down questions that they will research (what, where, when, why, who and how).

Please do not start working on the project with your child now. They took their books home to complete their worksheets about their mammal. They need to copy down all the 5W"s in the what they want to know (part of KWL chart). Students can read about their mammal to learn more about it, but Tr. Nancy and I are working with the class to teach them the steps of research.

Gym: We are running 21 gym Hijra laps! Today we ran 5 laps around the gym. We have 16 to go!
We played Green Light/ Red Light. We made 4 groups and took turns to race each other!

Islamic Studies: We finished reading  "EiD Around the World" in our Islamic Studies book.

Homework:

Complete page 24 in spelling workbook.

Upcoming Mammal Project-Tr.Nancy

Dear Parents,
Assalamu Alaikum

Teachers Hoda, Hina and I will be working together with the grade two students to help them along during their mammal research project. We understand that this is a new way for the grade two students to do research. We want them to familiarize themselves with the research steps -- we want them to feel comfortable and confident in doing so.
On Wednesday, during the grade two library visit, we tackled the first of three steps which is the "Planning" stage (beginning). We discussed what needs to be done. For instance, in the planning stage, students need to know what is required of them. They will need to ask themselves the following questions:
1) What am I asked to do? Answer: Prepare a research project on a mammal of my choice.
2) What mammal will I choose?
3) How long does my research project have to be?
4) Do I need a poster?
5) When is my project due?
Once the above-mentioned questions have been answered, the student can move on to the next phase which is finding out about the mammal.
1) What do I want to know about this mammal? To find out about the mammal, the student should be asking questions using "Who", "What", "Where", "When", "Why", and "How."
When the questions have been formulated, the student can decide which sources would be most helpful in his or her research ( nonfiction book, magazine articles, the internet...). To help them practice a little, I  used a "Who", "What", "Where", "When", "Why", and "How" dice. As I rolled the dice, students needed to come up with a question
concerning the black bear using the word "who" for example. When all the six questions were written on the white board, we used the book to answer the questions. We first looked at the table of contents and the index to see if the book was helpful. Once we made sure that it was, we proceeded to find the answers.
On the agenda for next week, the students will have chosen their mammal, and they will be ready to work on the planning stage. During their library visit, the teachers and I will be guiding them along, inshaAllah.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or by phone.

Sincerely,

Nancy-Ann Brethour

School Librarian
