New Math and social studies units

Assalamu Alaykom dear parents,

We are going to start a new math unit tomorrow in sha'Allah;
Unit 5: Data Management and Probability.
In this unit, your child will be learning about making graphs and probability- how likely an event is.
The learning goals of this unit are to:

  • collect, organize, describe, and label data on graphs. For example, your child's class may tally the number of days there is rain, snow, sun, or clouds during a month and graph the results.
  • read graphs and ask questions about the data they gathered.
  • talk about probability in day-to-day situations using words such as always, sometimes, or never to describe events. For example: It sometimes snows in spring.
  • Use mathematical language such as likely, unlikely, and probably when playing games. For example: I think the spinner will likely land on red.

The new Social Studies unit is Map, Globe, and Graphing skills.
The goal of this unit is:
  • to become familiar with maps, and the political map of Canada.
  • extracting information from globes, atlases, and maps about location, climate, and physical characteristics of a region.
  • identifying and locating continents, significant bodies of water, the equator, poles, and hemispheres on maps or a globe.
  • developing their ability to use appropriate elements of maps (e .g ., a title, symbols in a legend, direction, scale.
  • understand how physical features and climate contribute to differences in the ways people around the globe live.
  • understand how the natural environment affect the ways in which people meet their needs.

French update

Bonjour  chers  parents!

I hope that my email finds you in a good health and Iman,

Thank you for taking the time to watch your child’s portfolio presentation of the first French unit this year. We hope that you enjoyed the opportunity to share in your child’s accomplishments in French class so far. Today, your child began a new story unit in the French program.  Our second unit is based on an experience of a girl who lives in Québec. She decides to visit her friend who lives in Paris. She ends up taking numerous methods of transportation in order to finally reach her destination. The story is entitled Comment y aller?(How do I get there?). Your child will continue to increase her/his vocabulary in French by using the Gesture Approach and will also review previously learned words with the associated gestures. Please encourage your child to continue to share with you what s/he is learning in French class. At the end of this unit, your child will make another presentation . Homework relating to this unit begins in the first week of the unit, and the initial homework is review of gestured vocabulary introduced in the first unit.

Please ask your child to:

1.      read the story, Comment y aller?
2.      read the activity sheets containing questions and other activities based on the story;
3.      act out the story as a play, with puppets;
4.      Sing the song, Comment y aller?;
5.      show you the gestures s/he has learned .
6.      read the two creative stories that will be  written cooperatively by the class;
7.      read the story retelling and story extension that will be  written by your child.

New Science Unit

Assalamu Alaykom dear parents,
We are going to start a new science unit this week in shallah; Energy from wind and moving water.
In this unit, students will learn about the nature of moving water and moving air as forms of energy.
Students will investigate moving water and moving air as two energy sources by demonstrations of energy input and output. They will determine that moving water and moving air are renewable resources, which have advantages and disadvantages in their use. Finally, students will construct their own moving water and air propelled devices while identifying the factors that affect their motion and control.

Regards,
Tr. Hajer
