Tr. Hoda's Arabic Class

Assalamu Alaikum,

Alhamdulialh Grade 2 practiced reading sentences from words learned in previous lessons, and they know how to write them and understand their  meaning. They are learning about kinds of letter (taa'aa) as in the picture , and they did a writing activity regarding this topic. Now they are learning how to disconnect the word into letters.


Class Updates and Reminders!

We had a great week Alhamdulillah!

Spelling:  Students wrote their spelling quiz on words that have "wh" and "ch" sounds...
We completed lesson 20 in our spelling books where we learned words that have "c" and "ck" sounds..


Reading: This week, Sr. Madlien read us a chapter from a book about the companions. We learned about Salman and how he met the prophet and was freed from slavery. Students completed a worksheet about Salman. It was truly a touching story that we all enjoyed very much!

Math:We are learning about coins and how to add them. First, we made a mind map about money. Afterwards, we watched a nice educational video about money. Students have been working in pairs and independently to show different ways of showing $1 in coins (The grade 2 curriculum expectation is that student should know how to add different combinations of nickles, dimes and quarter to make a dollar).

They also worked in pairs to solve riddles about coins. Yesterday, students worked in pairs or  independently to buy sweets for one dollar by selecting the sweets and adding the coins to reach a dollar.




Math Center Fun: The 2Bs joined 2As and we had math centers where students got to visit different stations with board games, Place Value Puzzles, Base Ten Blocks, Place Value Matching Cards!













Science: We started our new unit on Matter...  Properties of Liquids,Solids and Gases. We learned that matter is anything that takes up space. We learned about the different states of matter and how the molecules are in a solid, liquid and a gas. Students performed an experiment with a hula hoop to learn how molecules take up space in each state of matter.They had a blast with this activity!

Portfolios: We have been working on designing our portfolio covers, selecting work to include in the portfolio and more! Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday in shaaAllah!

Gym: We played Porcupine Relay Race and had lots of fun!




Library: Tr. Nancy read another book on Hippopotamuses to the class. Next library period,  we will compare the two texts.

Islamic Studies: We are learning about the Seerah (Story of Prophet Mohammed (SAW)) and how we should always take the Prophet (SAW) as a role model. This week we completed exercises about what we have learned so far about the Seerah.

  • Homework pack is due on Thursday.
  • Spelling quiz on lesson 21 (words with c and ck) is on Monday isA.
  • I will be emailing you the schedule for the Student Led Conferences inshaaAlh! 
  • Students took home the milk forms.
  •  First Spelling Bee on March 2nd, in shaaAllah!
  • Spirit Day (Dress as a Leader) is this Monday!

Class Updates and Reminders!


Assalamu Alaikum,

We had a great week Alhamdulillah!

Spelling:  Students wrote their spelling quiz on  words that have "th" and "sh" sounds...
We completed lesson 20 in our spelling books where we learned words that have "wh" and "ch" sounds..

Reading: Students maintained stamina while reading to self. Masha'Allah they are doing an outstanding job maintain stamina! 

Writing:On Friday, it was the 100th day of school at Abraar. Students wrote in their journals what they would do if they celebrated 100 days in grade 2. They did a great job, MashaAllah!


Math:This week we explored more numbers. Students learned and practiced addition with grouping using base 10 blocks. 



Math Centres: Students practiced what they know about place value by visiting different math centres.They played different board games with dice and built numbers using place values on the iPad.

Library: Tr. Nancy talked to students about the library rules and consequences. Please see the pictures of rules and consequences below:
                               



Science: Students learned what matter is and started to learn about 3 different types of matter.

Islamic Studies: Students answered questions about what they have learned about Seerah.

Reminders:


  • Spelling quiz on  lesson 20, on Monday.
  • Homework pack is due on Thursday!.
  • Reports cards were sent home on Friday.
  • The Student Led Conference is on March 4 th inshaa Allah.  Please send  the SLC slip by Wednesday, February 24th, 2015.

Class Update and Reminder!


Assalamu Alaikum,

We had a wonderful week Alhamdulilah!

Spelling:  We completed lesson 19 in our spelling books where we learned words that have "th" and "sh" sounds..

Reading:  Sr. Madlien read us a great informative book about microbes called "The Invisible World of Microbes". We learned that we have more microbes on our body than the number of people in the whole world, and that a single drop of water can hold 20 million microbes!!! Students also completed a comprehension worksheet about microbes.

I checked out a funny book from the public library about homophones called "Dear Deer," and read it to the class.The "dear deer" had an aunt that was an ant!  It gave us a good laugh! Then, students paired up and did an activity where they wrote 2 sentences by picking homophones from the list. They had to pick one silly and one regular homophone.

Math: This week we explored more numbers. The 2A's joined us and students worked in groups to show the place value, standard form, expanded form and base ten blocks of two digit numbers in ice-cream cones! Students also learned how to expand a two digit number using different combinations of base ten blocks (e.g. 50+4=54, 40+14=54, 30+24=54, 0+54=54...etc).
                            




They also learned how to make tens and ones using edible math. We used pretzel sticks and froot loops to show the place value of different numbers. After practicing, students had a blast when they got to eat the edible base ten blocks.
                                            

Students also learned different ways to decompose numbers. They are doing a great job MashaAllah!

Literacy Centres:On Thursday, students visited different centers during their language block. They had a great time!

  • Snail Mail (We learned different parts of a letter (date, greeting, body, closing, signature) and students worked on writing letters to each other. Then, they put them in our class mailbox.
  • Funny Faces (Students worked on sequencing during this centre).
  • Guided Reading (One group read to me and answered comprehension questions orally).
  • Homophones(Students played a memory game about homophones on the iPad).
   






Library: Tr. Nancy is teaching students to compare texts when reading. She read us "Amazing Animals... HIPPOPOTAMUSES." Next library period, she will be reading us another book about hippopotamuses, in shaa Allah, so we can compare texts.

Computer Class: On Wednesday, we went to the computer lab and each student wrote on WordPad (practiced changing font, color, size and highlighting).They also learned how to save their work.

Islamic Studies: We are learning about the Seerah (The story of Prophet Muhammed (SAW)) and that we should follow in the Prophet's footsteps. We learned about the Prophet as a shepherd and a merchant. We also learned how the Prophet (SAW) solved the problem of the black stone when the Kabah was being rebuilt due to a flood.
ClassDojo Party: The 2Bs and 2As had a dojo party together, and we watched "Inside Out", ate popcorn, chips, and had yummy cake!
