Class Updates!

Assaalmu Alaikum Dear Parents,

Here are some class updates:

Spelling: Students completed exercises for lesson 17 last week. They wrote a quiz for lesson 17 today. Today they completed lesson 18 which is the review of lessons 13-17. Students took their spelling workbooks home to study the spelling words for the quiz from lesson 13-17.

Writing:Students wrote a paragraph in their journals about their favourite fruit.

Math:Last week,we reviewed from the fact fluency strategies of doubles and doubles plus 1.
We practiced different strategies to add numbers (Ways to make ten, doubles facts, doubles + 1). Students took home a doubles fact sheet which is attached in their agenda.

In addition to this, we learned about PLACE VALUE where we learned about digits and how to show them using base ten blocks. Students worked in groups to show different numbers using base ten blocks on a place value mat. Then they completed a worksheet independently.

Math Buddies:The grade 4 Math Buddies visited us and together we made "Double Dudes." Once we did the craft we each made "Double Bracelets" to practice the doubles facts.

Math Centers Fun:To review concepts learned in class about addition, we had math centers last week. Students took turns to play different board games about "doubles" and "doubles +1." They had a blast, Alhumdulilah!

Math Workshop: We had an amazing  math workshop  about coins, place value, fractions, and clocks. Students learned and reviewed these concepts through different fun and hands on activities. They had a blast ! Also, Jazakum Allahu Khairun for all parents who came to help out.

Science: We started our new unit on "Properties of Matter"(Solids, Liquids, and Gases).Students will identify the properties of matter. They will also be able to identify the different types of matter in their environment. They will gain knowledge through explanation and exploration. We learned that matter is anything that takes up space. We learned about the different states of matter and how the molecules are like in a solid, liquid and a gas. Students performed an experiment with a hula hoop to learn how molecules take up space in each state of matter.

 Social Studies:

We started a new unit about Map, Globe, and Graphing skills.
In this unit, students will be learning:
  • To Identify and locate continents, significant bodies of water, the equator, poles, and hemispheres on maps or globes.
  • To understand  and use cardinal directions.
  • To develop their ability to use appropriate elements of maps(e.g., a title, symbols in a legend, direction, scale[non-standard],and colour) to help extract information and/or when constructing maps for a specific purpose.

Computer Lab: We went to the computer lab where each student used a grid to make a map of a neighbourhood. They used symbols and cardinal directions to construct different locations on the map.
