Class Updates!

Assalamu Alaikum,
Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful week, Alhamdululilah! Here are some updates:

Spelling:  Students completed activities for lesson 25 (letter r with vowels).

Grammar:We learned about pronouns and that they take the place of a noun (Personal, Possessive). Students completed worksheets where they circled pronouns and replaced nouns with pronouns.

Chocolate Fever Novel Study: In 2B, we started a novel study called "Chocolate Fever" which is written by Robert Kimmel Smith. Throughout this unit, students will be learning different reading strategies (predictions, comprehension, cause and effect, text to self connections, summary, problem and solution, character traits, main idea, etc.), inshaallah. So far, we have covered two chapters and students did prediction and comprehension activities. Ask your child about Henry and his chocolate fever. :)

Math: We started to learn addition and subtraction with regrouping. Last week, we focused on different ways to add 2 digit numbers using base ten blocks, the decomposing method and the traditional method (vertical way). Students worked independently and in groups to add 2- digit numbers using these strategies. Please see below the links for the strategies we are learning in class:

Science: On Monday, we talked about the difference between solids that float and sink. Students looked at different solids and predicted whether each solid was going to float or sink. Then, we put the solids in water and recorded the results as a class. Students also learned about buoyancy.

On Tuesday, we did an experiment on "sink or float" where students had to build a shape out of a piece of clay which could float on water. We had a great time with this hands-on learning experience, Alhumdulilah.

Field Trip We had a great time on our field trip to the Museum of Aviation and Space on Wednesday, Alhumdulilah! Students attended a hands-on workshop about our current unit of study in science, "Properties of Matter," and also explored the exhibits in the museum.

I would like to thank all the volunteers for their generous time and help! We couldn't have done it without them! Jazakum Allahu khairan.

Reminders:
  • Spelling quiz on "lesson 25" will be on Tuesday inshaa Allah. Students took their spelling books home to practice for the quiz.
  • Encourage your child to read on Razkids everyday for twenty minutes.
  •  Homework pack is due next Thursday.
Jazakum Allahu Khairun!
