Class Updates and Reminders!

Assalamu Alaikum wr wb ,
Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful week, Alhamdululilah! Here are some updates:

Spelling: Students did their spelling quiz on lesson 5We completed review exercises from lesson 1-5 in our spelling books.

Reading:We started to learn about reading strategies on connecting text to self, text to world and text to text. This week we focused on connecting text to self. Students listened to "Searching for Kindness" and they made connections to themselves. Each student wrote a thank you note on a heart- shaped cut out for someone in the class who did an act of kindness to them in a certain way. Then they put their hearts on the kindness tree in front of Abraar Gym.They replied back the kindness with kindness by saying thank you!

Grammer: We practiced identifying linking verbs in sentences. Then, we started to learn and distinguish four types of sentences. Students did different activities to distinguish the four types of sentences.

Math: Students learned how to create and extend growing patterns through different methods (pictures, word problems, and T-chart). We did different activities by working in pairs and independently throughout the week. On Friday, students reviewed repeating and growing patterns as a class and then wrote a pop quiz on patterns independently.

From Monday, we will be starting a unit called "Data Management" inshaaAllah.

Science: Students completed their "Owl Booklets" and did a fabulous job, MashaAllah. Please take a look at the picture below:

We started to learn about Fish. Students watched an educational video and then completed a tree chart  on the characteristics of Fish as a class.

Social Studies: We learned what a community is and then watched an informative video about urban and rural communities. Then students completed a worksheet where they wrote down the similarities and differences between each of the communities.

Health: We discussed the different food groups. Students took turns in groups to write and draw food pictures under each food group on chart paper.

Islamic Studies: !n our first Islamic Studies class, we read the story of the two sons of Prophet Adam and in the second class we reviewed the story. They took turns to retell the story. We learned that there is good jealousy and bad jealousy. Students gave examples of good jealousy, and bad jealousy.

Islamic Studies/Language/Arts:After reading the beautiful story "Searching for Kindness" and learning the fact that kindness lies in one's heart, we made a craft using the pointillism technique. Since we are learning about the four types of sentences, so we used this knowlegde in our art class where each student had to pick a sentence type  from a bag and made that sentence on kindness(e.g. My friend is so kind!- excited sentence) . Afterwards, they wrote that sentence inside the heart on the t-shirt and then they decorated  it by making patterns using the pointillism technique.

Kindness Photo Contest:

Zeina and Maya won the contest!Congratulations to both of them, MashaAllah! On Friday, the 2Bs enjoyed the donut party Alhumdulilah.

Students practiced describing patterns and the core of a pattern through different activities in class. On Thursday, we learned about growing patterns. Home connection:
A growing pattern happens when something is added each time. Please encourage your child to create a growing pattern at home with pictures, objects, shapes, and numbers. Here is an example:

On Friday, students practiced repeating and growing patterns during math center time. They had a blast!

Class Updates and Reminders!

As-salamu-alaikum wa Rahmatullah,

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful week Alhumdulilah! Here are some updates.

Carpet Time:

Every day we start our first period with our izkars and memorizing the new dua of the month which is correlated with October 's character trait, " Kindness." The dua of the month is:

اللَّهم إني أسألك فعل الخيرات، وَتَرْكَ الْمُنْكَرَاتِ، وَحُبَّ الْمَسَاكِينِ

Allāhumma as’aluka fi`lal Khayrāt. Wa tarkal munkarā, wa Hubbal masākeen

“O Allah, I ask You to help me do good deeds, abandon bad deeds, and love the poor"

Read to Self: We went over the "I CHART" for Read to Self then students took their book boxes and read quietly.

Spelling: Students wrote a spelling test on lesson 2 and the bonus was to write three verbs. Then they learned about the short vowel sounds a and in lesson 3. Students finished different activities using list words in their spelling books.

Grammar: We started to learn about verbs. Students worked in groups to make a mind map about verbs on chart paper. All groups presented their mind maps in front of the class. They all did a wonderful job, Masha-Allah! After the presentation, students completed a worksheet independently to show what they know about verbs.

In addition to this, students also used pipe cleaners to make a stickman. They wrote a simple sentence about their stickman to show what action their stickman is doing. They all did a wonderful job!

Math: Students practiced ordinal numbers on calendar worksheets and solved word problems. Students also reviewed/learned about comparing numbers by using greater and less than symbols.

Kindness:  On Monday, the first character trait of the year "Kindness" was launched in the assembly by our Islamic Studies Co-ordinator  Tr. Dina Shalabi. Followed by this, we talked and discussed what kindness is and how we can find kindness around us. The 2Bs brainstormed different ways that they can be kind and show little acts of kindness in their homes, at school, and in their community by making a mind map about kindness. We started a "Kindness Jar" in our class so when a student or group of students do any random act of kindness during class we will put a flower in the jar. Our goal is to fill the jar with all the flowers and spread kindness!:)

Your child also brought home an ``Act of Kindness`` calendar. Please talk to your child about what he/she can do to show an “Act of Kindness” (e.g; helping mom or dad, sharing toys with siblings, talk politely, smiling, going to the masjid, giving charity, sharing food, cleaning up, etc). Put the calendar on your fridge and write the acts of kindness they perform on it
every day and send the calendar back to class on November 1st, 2016.
Jazak-Allahu-khairun for your support! insha-Allah.

Science: Students learned about mammals as one of the animal categories with a backbone by watching an educational video followed by a good class discussion on the characteristics of mammals. In the next lesson, we reviewed the characteristics by writing them on a "Tree Map." Afterward, each student finished writing five special things about mammals independently.
