Assalamu Alaykom dear parents,
We have started a new language unit: Biographies.
In this unit, students read a variety of recounts in the form of biographies. They read about several famous Canadians, including a gold medalist at the Paralympic Games, a children’s author, an astronaut, and a hockey player. As students read the recounts (biographies), graphic text, DVD covers, cartoon, and interview, they develop
• an understanding of recount text form;
• an understanding of how the conventions of DVD covers convey meaning;
• the reading strategy of making inferences;
• the listening strategy of making inferences;
• the writing strategy of putting things in order;
• word work, word study, and vocabulary skills.

Classwork and Homework
Assalamu Alaykum dear parents,
We had a wonderful week alhamdulillah.
Reading
In our reading center students did guided reading and shared reading. We read texts from Nelson Language Arts (Reach Out).
We have also started our new Language unit: Biographies.
Understanding and appreciating biographies is an important skill that all students should master. Biographies provide information about people who have accomplished many things in their lifetime. They allow a person to be remembered over time after he is long gone. Learning about an important person in one’s culture allows for a sense of pride and gratitude for his accomplishments. Reading about important people from other cultures also allows students a more global understanding of the world. It also allows English learners more opportunity to relate to what they are learning about. Students need to be motivated to discover another person’s accomplishments and utilizing pre-reading strategies allows this to happen.
Writing/
Grammar
We started a writing center where students are given a writing prompt that corresponds to current units of study. They are expected to follow the steps of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, publishing) with their work.
We have also studied subject and object pronouns.
Math
This week we have written in our end of unit journals. Students also worked on their Graph projects. They were asked to ask a question and to conduct a survey about it. After tallying the answers students sat in groups to do a graph.
We have also done some extra worksheets to wrap up the unit.
Spelling
The spelling words for this week are: what, such, where, peach, much, when, whip, arch, coach, who.
Science
We have reviewed the two simple machines we've already seen : wheels and axles, and levers. We have seen what a wedge and a pulley are. Students then have done some worksheets on these simple machines.
Social Studies
Students have used the map of Canada to locate their local community and to find directions between different locations in Canada.
Islamic Studies
We have been working on in-class projects: Showing Love and Respect to our Families: Do’s and Don’ts.

Classwork and Homework
Assalamu Alaikom dear parents,
Our week was wonderful, Alhamdulillah.
Our week was wonderful, Alhamdulillah.
Writing
|
We have been learning how to add details to a piece
of writing.
When writing, students should check capitalization,
punctuation and spelling.
|
Mathematics
|
Students build cut-out pictures according to spinner
outcomes.
They have also used a spinner, predicted the winner, and
recorded results.
We have looked at pictures and decided whether they are
likely or unlikely. Students then created their own likely and unlikely
pictures.
Children design a game with a spinner, predict the
results and play the game, explaining the results.

Spelling
|
No spelling test for the week after March break in sha'Allah.

Science
|
"What is movement?" and "What
are ways things move?" We came up with the idea that movement is
when something changes position or part of something changes its position.
Some ways to move we thought about were turning, swinging, bouncing…
We
learned about position by making a list of position words (in, on, under,
etc). We did a worksheet to look closer at our position words.
Please read and make the
booklet; « Simple Machines »

Social Studies

Students followed written directions to complete
information on a castle floor map.
Reading map symbols.
|
Islamic Studies
|
We have read and discussed the story of Adam’s sons
(Qabeel and Habeel)
|
In the homework booklet, there is a story map. Students should read a story and fill in the map.
Students should also listen to the online story (Brave Irene) (you can find it in the link below.)
We will discuss the story in the classroom. I'll also ask them to try to retell the story and talk about the lessons they have learnt from it.
p.s: I have booked a science workshop for April 7th, in sha'Allah. We'll be in need of volunteers. It is a centres based workshop which means we will need to round up sufficient volunteers to help run our 5 centres. Each centre must be tended to by an adult. Unfortunately we cannot run the workshop without volunteers as there is equipment which could result in injury if not handled appropriately, as well as instructions needing to be delivered to students.
Jazakom Allah khairan and have a nice and restful March break in sha'Allah.
